Parentally-signed syllabi are due September 4/5. The format you use to respond to these items is up to you (paragraph, bullet points, etc.). Each item must be addressed on a separate sheet of paper (or half sheet of paper).
Although you need to have your own copy of the Old Man and the Sea text, many students find it advantageous (and even enjoyable) to listen to the text as they read. (You still need to be actively engaged, annotating, and thinking as you read—you may need to pause the recording so you can write in the margins—but having hearing the words as you see them can be helpful).
Here are two online resources: Choose between two reading speeds at esl-bits.net. Listen to actor Charlton Heston read the novel at YouTube. Please print out the in-class worksheet. Define the following words as Neruda uses them in the poem; write your answers in the margin (line numbers appear in parentheses):

While videos seldom live up to the texts they're based on, this hand-painted adaptation of Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea is spectacular. And though it isn't a substitute for reading the novel, it is definitely worth checking out. Read about the making-of here. |
